I have been away from the site for the past two months due to an injury. It was impressive to see how much has changed during this time. The Carpenter’s Workshop is completed enough to get a real sense of how the building will feel when finished. Light pours in from skylights onto the angular open spaces and made me think of the first time I photographed here. It was so dark I had to use a tripod for three-minute-long exposures.
The Marine Workshops still feels vast – almost more so now that it is filling up with floors and rooms. The great big window holes give a real sense of space and connection to the surrounding landscape.
An article about this project can be found on the Triple Pundit website here.
The old Marine and Carpenter’s Workshops in Newhaven Harbour have been empty for a long time. The buildings will now have a new lease of life. Renovation and rebuilding will transform this beautiful old building into a new University Technical College for 14-19-year-olds. UTC@Harbourside will specialise in marine and environmental engineering. The partners behind this new school have hired me to document the process of this renovation.
