Lewes Bonfire – it is that time of year again

Posted by carlotta on Wednesday November 6th, 2013 at 12:34pm

Today is the day after the annual Lewes Bonfire celebrations and I imagine that most of the town is waking up as bleary-eyed as I feel after the intense celebrations. Every year I embrace the challenge of photographing an event marked by extreme contrasts of light: flaming torches, explosive bangers, colourful costumes and deepest darkness. Some improved equipment has helped, along with things I figure out each year and add to my personal arsenal of techniques. My favourite shot this year is the first one here – lucky timing with a Zulu Warrior silhouetted by exploding bangers, his front lit by torch light and red paper rookie wrappers strewn around him. One thing I still haven’t figured out is how to handle watching a banger about to go off by my feet. I usually dive into the crowd at that point. Several years ago my lens filter was hit by one and I keep that filter to use one day a year only… More photos from Lewes Bonfire 2013 can be found here.
