Phoenix Project, day 4

Here is the next instalment of my daily post about the Phoenix Project, a photo documentary about the former industrial site in the heart of Lewes that is now home to over a dozen vibrant arts and community groups. An exhibit and art trail of the project opens in a little under three weeks.

Channelling Degas

I am slowly tracking down events I can photograph at each of the sites on the Phoenix Estate. It takes persistence and organisation.

Yesterday I went to shoot a ballet class in the dance studio at the top of the Phoenix Theatre. The space is open and light, thanks to skylights along the roof line. I overheard the dancers commenting on the fact that the floor had just been varnished. It was, indeed, beautifully reflective. Photographing this class had its challenges. Although the skylights and windows created lovely highlights, the strong contrast against the white walls were hard on my camera meter. Sometimes though, the elements came together and I almost felt I was channelling Degas. See more photos of the Phoenix Theatre here.
