Phoenix Theatre, Lewes

I finally got a chance to take a look at the heartbreaking site of the burned out Phoenix Theatre on the Phoenix Estate in Lewes. Last Saturday night there was a raging fire that entirely destroyed the building and everything in it. Although it was extremely fortunate that no one was hurt in the fire, it is a personal tragedy for the many people who used the Phoenix Theatre as studio and storage space for their artwork and those who used it for many other purposes: dance and theatre classes and performances, boot fairs and parties. At two other nearby buildings are closed while the risk of potential fire damage is assessed. The remains of the Phoenix Theatre is now being demolished as are two empty adjoining buildings.

It left me feeling terribly sad for the people who had put their heart and soul into making this interesting building a focus for creativity and community. I can only imagine what it must have felt like for them to see it in unstoppable raging flames. I am including a shot from last year when I visited a ballet class here in the beautiful top floor studio.
