Documenting the Battle of Lewes anniversary celebrations continue with a first read-through of a brand new play. The playwright is the celebrated poet John Agard, a long-time Lewes resident. The players are students from the Sussex Downs College drama department. The location is a classroom at the college. The process is filled with enthusiasm, excitement and laughter. A blog post about this shoot can be found here.
The 750 anniversary of the Battle of Lewes (the ‘birth of British democracy’) is coming up in May. To commemorate this momentous event, the Lewes Youth Theatre and Sussex Downs College are putting on a hugely ambitious project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (young roots). They have asked me to document the event and mentor one of their photography students. I gladly agreed as I loved the whole project: building a medieval village for students to live in for 3 days, inviting prominent politicians and political thinkers to come to the village to discuss Democracy and a medieval-themed festival where a new play by John Agard will be performed.
