The preparations for the Battle of Lewes celebrations are now under way so it was important to start my documentation before any building work takes place. The location is the Lewes Railway Land, now a nature reserve, formerly the extensive railway sidings of Lewes Station. A blog post about this shoot can be found here.
The 750 anniversary of the Battle of Lewes (the ‘birth of British democracy’) is coming up in May. To commemorate this momentous event, the Lewes Youth Theatre and Sussex Downs College are putting on a hugely ambitious project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (young roots). They have asked me to document the event and mentor one of their photography students. I gladly agreed as I loved the whole project: building a medieval village for students to live in for 3 days, inviting prominent politicians and political thinkers to come to the village to discuss Democracy and a medieval-themed festival where a new play by John Agard will be performed.
