The weekend long Battle of Lewes festival is fast approaching and every 24 hours the Railway Land site changes dramatically. Colourful tents are going up while the college students hurry to finish everything off in time. It all has to be ready in two days time.
The 750 anniversary of the Battle of Lewes (the ‘birth of British democracy’) is on the 14th of May, 2014. To commemorate this momentous event, the Lewes Youth Theatre and Sussex Downs College are putting on a hugely ambitious project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (young roots). They have asked me to document the event and mentor one of their photography students. I gladly agreed as I loved the whole project: building a medieval village for students to live in for 3 days, inviting prominent politicians and political thinkers to come to the village to discuss Democracy and a medieval-themed festival where a new play by John Agard will be performed.
