Over the next few months I will be documenting the process of change happening at the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust Centre in Deptford, London. The Trust are launching an exciting new development that will transform the original building into a thriving, creative, co-working ‘HUB’ for start-ups in the built environment. More information about the project can be found here.
The Trust was founded in honour of Stephen Lawrence, an 18-year-old tragically murdered in London in an unprovoked, racially-motivated attack in 1993. Five suspects were arrested but no one was ever convicted. In 1998 a public inquiry into the case led to ‘one of the most important moments in the modern history of criminal justice in Britain’. Stephen’s mother, Doreen (now Baroness Lawrence) founded the trust in 1998 with the aim of promoting a positive community legacy in her son’s name by providing ‘support and bursaries to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who wanted to become architects, because Stephen’s ambition was to become an architect’.
