Preparing for the Battle of Lewes

The first full read-through of a new play by the celebrated poet John Agard is not something to be sniffed at. This is especially true if the play has been written specifically for students to perform at a festival of local and potentially national historical importance. The students sat in a circle with John and with their teacher Phil Rose, scripts in hand, and read through from start to finish. Outbursts of laughter, cheering and quite a few asides of “oh, that is my favourite line of the whole play” punctuated the reading. Although there was not a lot visually to photograph, I loved being part of the stimulating atmosphere of history coming alive and capturing the attention of young people. I really can’t wait to see the final performance. More information on this project can be found here.
