The ultimate fish story

The ultimate fish story

Many years ago, before I moved to England, I lived in the little costal town of Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod. This photograph is from that time and the scene it captures is the stuff of legends.

That is a prized bluefin tuna that had wandered inadvertently into the harbour and was spotted from shore. A little boat was rowed out to it and an epic battle ensued between man (actually two men) and beast that lasted hours. Eventually beast tired before man and it got dragged slowly to shore. You can see here that it is still alive and thrashing crazily.

I wish I could recall how much the tuna sold for. As I remember, it went to buyers in Japan and the amount seemed astronomical at the time. But it was the story of the heroic struggle in the harbour that we all dined out on for weeks – for years even.

Cape Cod lobster boat

Cape Cod lobster boat

To give you a complete break from all things Christmassy (apart from my special offer, of course), here is a little taste of the New England coastline. This was taken from the cabin of the lobster boat Angela and Mary, looking across the harbour to Provincetown, the little town that sits at the very tip of Cape Cod. It was a perfect autumn day of sparkling sun and deep blue sky and water. There was a fierce wind and rough seas outside the shelter of the harbour, which is why she was docked instead of out hauling traps.

I am always interested in the places where people work, so exploring the Angela and Mary was a treat.

Best of all was the opportunity to look through a cabin window and see the world from the captain’s point of view. You’ll find the rest of the photos here.

Carnival comes to Provincetown

Carnival comes to Provincetown

For a last gasp of summer fun, I give you Carnival in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Well-known for outrageous costumes and floats, this parade is one of the highlights of the summer season in this small town at the very end of Cape Cod. The theme changes every year and this one was Gods and Goddesses, though I am not

sure where this gingham lady fits in with that motif. I particularly like her pink elephant necklace and the coordinated hair bow, sunglasses and dress. You can find more flamboyantly dressed carnival paraders and photographs of other celebrations here.
